Processing and upscaling of particle synthesis

You need particles at a kg scale?

You want to try your lab-synthesis on a larger scale to obtain a first prototype?

Find out what equipment  we can offer to synthesize and process particles on a larger scale.

Stirring reactor (100 liter).

Fraunhofer ISC in Würzburg has two reactors for upscaling of laboratory syntheses up to a 100 liter scale, equipped with in-situ analysis for particle size measurement to monitor and control processes. Operating temperature range of -50 to +200 °C allows versatile use.

Continuous ultrasound reactor

Continuous ultrasound reactor.

Ultrasonic reactor which can be operated in an "open" batch operation mode or with a closed reaction chamber. With high pressure within the chamber ultrasound can be coupled to an output of 1000 W. The integrated cooling system allows a customized temperature adapted to the process. The attached injection system allows for addition of chemicals during the process into the ultrasonic chamber.

Semi-continuous centrifuge.

Semi-continuous centrifuge CEPA Z11. The high rotational frequency of 60,000 min-1 yields a relative centrifugal force of 80,000 G (= eighty thousand times gravitational acceleration). Particles with a size down to10 nm can be separated from aqueous suspensions. A quantity of 100 liter is easy to handle with this innovative system.

Spray-drying facility

Explosion-proof spray dryer for laboratory and technical scale for drying aqueous and non-aqueous suspensions in an oxygen or nitorgen atmosphere. The feed is supplied via pneumatic peristaltic pumps and is distributed in the drying tower either through a centrifugal atomizer or a two-component cone. The solvent is evaporated and the resulting powder is deposited via a cyclone. Depending on the parameters  grain sizes of about 3 – 30 μm are obtained.

Continuous flow globe mill.

The flexible laboratory globe mill from Netzsch can disperse particles in solvents from smallest amounts to a continued operation and grind them to a minimum size of 100 nm. Finest grinding agents can be used due to the centrifugal separating system Zeta®. With customized grinding chambers and a water cooling system, the process can be carefully adapted to the material properties of the ground particles.

Magnetic drum separator for effective removal of large quantities of magnetic particles. The flow capacity can be varied from a few milliliters to several liters per hour depending on the material that should be separated.

Encapsulation device

System for encapsulation of liquid or liquifiable substances (e. g. aqueous solutions, suspensions, oils, polymer melts up to 100 °C) in UV-curable matrices. Capsule production with vibration-induced drop generator in the range of 0.5 – 5 mm. We possess a library of many different shell materials.

Ultrafiltration

Ultrafiltration device from SIMATEC for membrane development and characterization as well as for concentration and separation in a pressure range up to 15 bar. Module for flat membrane with an area of 80 cm2 in crossflow and adapter for characterization of hollow fibers in dead-end operation. Receiving vessel with 8 liters capacity expandable to quasi-continuous operation. Valve set and sensors available for nanofiltration and reverse osmosis up to 70 bar.

Glas autoclave

Versatile stirred autoclave of the type Parr 5100 for small to medium synthesis volumes up to 2 liters. The double-walled glass container allows visual observation and control of hydrothermal processes and reactions to max. 10 bar. Working under safety glass and continuous sampling possible.
